What is Melasma?
Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation of brown or greyish-blue patches that sometimes look like clusters of freckles.
It normally appears on the face such as the cheek area, forehead, upper lip and the bridge of the nose, and can also appear in parts of your body that get the most sun exposure.
Melasma is not harmful in any way but its appearance can cause a little distress as it is a sign of skin ageing.
What Causes Melasma?
Also known as the “mask of pregnancy” due to the overproduction of melanin, which is responsible for the colour pigment of our skin. This often happens when there are changes in hormone levels, especially during pregnancy. However, men can also experience melasma though it is much more common in women.
It can also be triggered by oral contraceptive medication, and of course by sun exposure too.
Exposure to harmful UV rays is one of the major contributors to melasma and age spots. This is why wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is essential to minimize its effects.
